jmGateway

jmGateway is a server appliance that allows you to access many devices using a single IP address.

In order to access an Ethernet based device you need to know the device’s IP address.  The IP address is a number value like 192.168.1.5.  Every site on the Internet has in IP address.  You do no not see the IP address because there is a special server on the Internet that converts a name (e.g. www.yahoo.com) into the IP address.

There are 2 types if IP addresses; fixed IPs and dynamic IPs.  Fixed IP addresses are fixed.  They do not change.  A dynamic IP can change over time or when the computer or device is restarted.

If a machine’s IP address is fixed, you can access the device within your company local network.  However, you can not access it from outside the company.  In other words you can not access if from your cell phone while you are on the beach.

When it comes to the Internet, an IP address can be public or private.  A public IP address can be access by anyone on the Internet.  A private IP address is an IP address that is not seen by the Internet.  The private IP address is used only inside of your company’s local network.  If you were on the Internet, you can not access private IP addresses.

jmGateway allows you access machines with both private and dynamic IPs.  With jmGateway you will able to access your machines from the Internet and from cellular phones.    Here is how it works…

jmGateway is a server computer that you put on your company’s local area network.  All the JMobile machines will connect with jmGateway and register their IP address.  The can register a dynamic IP address or a fixed IP address.  It does not matter.

When you want to access the machine from the Internet, you will access jmGateway.  jmGateway will then automatically transfer the packets to the appropriate machine inside of your company network.  When you access the machine, the operation of jmGateway is transparent.  It appears like you are access the machine directly from the Interent.  However behind the scene, jmGateway is routing the packets to make sure you can get to the desired machine.

jmGateway acts as a firewall which makes the connection with the machine more secure.  It will only send packets that are valid for the machine.  If someone tries to attack your machine from the outside world, jmGateway makes sure the assault in not relayed to the target machine.

jmGateway is designed to work with jmEngine and jmDeviceServer interfaces.
